The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a fun watch that made me like the two main characters a lot more than I did before in the past Marvel movies. Season 1 follows Sam Wilson aka the Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier trying to stop the group known as the flagsmashers that want the world to have no borders. When doing this Sam and Bucky run into the new Captain America aka John F. Walker which causes problems for them since this new Captain America has a bit of an anger issue. Throughout the series, they run into old and new allies and villains that will help them on their journey to stop the flagsmashers.
The show gives you an inside look into the lives of Sam and Bucky. This is something that was missing in the past Marvel movies they appeared in. You see how Sam's family is struggling to stay afloat. You really feel it when he and his sister go to try and get a loan from the bank but they deny them right away. For Bucky, you see how he is struggling with his past sins that he committed when he was the Winter Soldier. He tries to correct these sins by getting revenge on the people that made him commit them. He also has mandatory therapy sessions due to his pardon from the US government which don't always go well.
There are many returning characters from the movies in the show. Those include Sharron Carter, Batroc, and Zemo. I think all of these characters were good choices to bring back as they all fit and have their own reasons for being there. It was cool to see Sharon back as we never really got to see what happened to her after Captain America Civil War. Zemo I felt was a great addition, but his role in the show kind of confused me. While I really liked Zemo I felt like he was both over and underused. He was overused at some points because his writing and the acting were so good that for me he almost started to overshadow Sam and Bucky. But I still feel like he was underused since I feel like he could have been used in a much better way that wouldn't overshadow the main characters. Even though Batroc wasn't used that much I feel like he was used in a good way and he was also the reason we found out about the power broker who is a person we will learn more about throughout the season.
Now for the new additions to the cast. I thought Wyatt Russell did an incredible job playing John F. Walker and he really made you hate character which is what you are supposed to feel. Another new addition was Cle Bennet playing John F. Walker's sidekick Battlestar. To be honest, I didn't really care about this character at all, but I definitely get why he had to be in the show for reasons I will not say. Then in my opinion we have the weakest part of the show for me which was the flagsmashers. Their leader Karli Morgenthau played by Erin Kellyman. I actually thought she did a great job with what she was given, but what she was given wasn't all that great.
The flagsmashers main goal was to create a world without borders which makes sense and they stick to that for the first 5 episodes, but by episode 6 it is like they completely switch their goals which made no sense to me and really made me enjoy the show a little less and took me out of the story. However, the acting of Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell and the fight scenes were able to bring me back into the show and helped cover up the messiness of the plot.
All in all, I really liked the first season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While it isn't my favorite Marvel property it is definitely up there because of its realness and its focus on the real lives of the two main heroes. Which we almost never get in other Marvel movies. My rating for the first season for the Falcon and the Winter Soldier is 7.5/10.
